Salmon Vs. Dams RAFTS Draft 1

Driving Question: Should we remove Columbia River dams to restore Salmon populations?

What have I learned that could be used as evidence?

I went to Bonneville Dam. I have also read many articles on the internet about Salmon, and Dams. I think I have learned the most things in class. Another thing that i have learned is that Salmon have to travel through Dams on the columbia and it can take up to a couple weeks before the Salmon find their way out. When the Fish get into the ocean the eat a lot! The highest weaghing Salmon I heard of was 120+ pounds. The Salmon, when they are ready to spawn, they go back to the river. When they get to the Columbia River they will know it because of the smell or the non-salty water. The Salmon travel up the river against the strong currents, and through the Dams. If the Salmon do not get caught in fishing nets or get killed by fish eating animals, or get lost and die in the Dams they will get to their spawning grounds to lay their eggs. After the mother and father fish spawn... They die. They die because once they get to the river from the ocean their mouths just force shut and lock. Their mouths do not open for any reason at all.

How might this evidence be used in the court case?

In Bonneville Dam I learned about how much Energy, and Electricity is made there. Its amazing! Theres only one problem though, Bonneville Dam, and all the other Dams are dieing, and thier number count is decresing rappidly. The Bonneville Dam has 10 Hydropowered Generaters. The Generaters spinned faster then u can even immagine! On the outside of the spinning Generaters, there is copper which makes the electricity. The spinning Generater is only 3/4 of an inch away from the copper. The closer the Generater is to the copper when it is spinning the more electricity u get. Since the spinning Generater is so close the the copper, it sets off maximum power, and thats just one of the Generaters. Since Theres 10 Generaters and only one gives u maximum power, imagine what you get with 10! We have more power then we need. So i think that we should get rid of some of the Dams. I say we do not need all the Dams so I think that some of them are just in the way.

Some skill i have  is using my brain and being smart.

You need to know how to work cameras and  your brain.

I provide information to people over the t.v. by updateing people on recent activities.

I work all around, where ever i film.

This will be my first year.

I earned my degree at the Heritage University.

What do i have to do to make my job affectively? I have to keep my head up, turn on the camera, and do my work! I have to write news on whats happinging for people out there watching the t..v.

Guiding Question Response

My Guiding Question was. How can I help biodiversity? I do not know why i have picked that question but at the time it was probably because I thought it was the easiest question. I have noticed that none of the questions are easy.

How I am going to answer my Guiding Question. How can I help biodiversity? I can help by cleaning up the shrub steppe of garbage, trash, and recylable items. The shrub steppe needs help with garbage and trash thats just thrown into the shrub steppe.

The Shrub Steppe is filled with invasive species like cheat grass and cows. Cheat grass spreads faster then you can even imagine! We cant get rid of the cows because thats what we eat.

Many farmers buy land, and grow crops on it where the shrub steppe used to be. They grow feilds of cheat grass and that cheat grass seeds get all over the place! If there wasent cheat grass there could be alot more shrub steppe still out there.

The cows eat all the food and take up lots of land were the shrub steppe used to be. Farmers buy shrub steppe land and put their cows and crops on it and take away the shrub steppe.

Many of the shrub steppe animals have died off and went extinct because of these reasons i just explained. Some of the animals that have died and went extinct are the Sage Grouse, and The Pygmi Rabbit.

Another way i can help by is helping the animals and their lifestyle. They need help with breeding.

Man Vs. Nature Project Reflection

Driving question: What should be done about biodiversity in the shrub steppe.

                                                         Summary

What was it about? Well the project was about biodiversity in the shrub steppe. The shrub steppe needs help because its disspearing along with all the shrub steppe animals such as the Sage Grouse and the Pygmi Rabbit. What did we do? Well we(me and my classmates) went out to the field where the shrub steppe is and observed the area. We looked at all the shrub steppe and the invasive species all around. Why did we do it? The reason I did it is because I want to help the shrub steppe and restore it back to normal. I want to get rid of all the invasive species such as cheat grass, cows, and other plants. Getting rid of invasive species such as cows and cheat grass would be impossible. We need cows for our food that we eat, and cheat grass seeds are all over and it grows pretty fast.

Key learning points

1. Going out to the field i would say would be the most important because going out to the field was the main objective for everyone.

2. In biology class almost everyone went out to the field for 3 hours. I was unable to go out to the field for the three hours due to absentness.

Work Samples

1. One of the best works, I have to say they were the Feild Investigation Report

2. Another best work to me, is the Sonnet poem about nature. I felt great about doing the assignment because it was easy, and not as hard as it may seem.

   Reflection

Strengths: Some of my strenghts are poems because i like to write some poems. I like to write sonnet poems, and free verse poems. Concrete poems are not my best. I like writing and typing because i can practice my writing skills with the pencil, I type really fast.

Weakneses: Some of my weakneses are goofing off in class. Another one is falling asleep because im always super tired. The reason i'm always tired is because i'm such a heavy sleeper. I sleep very deeply and do not wake up very easy. Reading and tests are my number one weekness. Reading a book or doing a test for even a minute will put me to sleep like nothing else.

If i had to do this project over: If I had to do this project over i would have gone out to the field like everyone else. If i got to go out to the field this whole project would have been so much easier!

How I can apply what I've learned to other situations: I learned how the shrub steppe needs help, and what stuff and things in the shrub steppe needs helps. Learning this stuff helps me because in the future I can help the shrub steppe by trying my hardest to get rid of invasive species like cheat grass which would be nearly impossible due to the seeds being everywhere. Farmers are not going to give up their land to get rid of the cheat grass because the cheat grass, is what alot of the farmers grow.

Self Assessment and Reflection

By the end of this week the paws project shall be due and turned in. There are a few things that i must work on posterous and turn in before its due. A few of those things are this Self Assessment and Reflection, the draft of driving question, Final Draft Poem Publishable version, and the Feild investigation Draft Report 2.On this self Assessment and Reflection draft i have to write about the things i have to work on this week like my plan. I write about what i have to write and what im going to be doing on each of those assignments. On the Draft of Driving Question, i have to write the Driving Question and my answer to the Driving question. On the final Draft Poem Publishable version, i got a edit on my gradeing which means Mr. Olden liked my poem but there was a quite a few things that i have to fix like spelling, error corection, and ryhmes. On the Feild ivestigation Draft Report 2, i have to write about the feild and what i did out there. I have to write my Guiding Question and answer my Guiding question. I also have to write how i did out in the feild and whats going on in the Shrub-Steppe.

biodiversity draft 2

I think we should help breed the animals that are going extinct like the sage grouse, and the pygmi rabbit. How i think i should help with biodiversity in the shrub-steppe, is by telling people that the shrub steppe needs help. I could also tell people that the animals need help breeding before they go extinct. In many areas of the shrub steppe, there is no water and it is super dry. So all the plants eventually get to dry and die off.

Biodiversity on the shrub steppe. Many animals that live in the shrub steppe have gone extinct or are almost extinct. Why are so many animals almost extinct or already extinct? I think that is because, almost all the shrub steppe is gone. theres probably about 40 percent of the shrub-steppe left. Plants like the Sage Brush are native plants to the Shrub Steppe. the Sage Brush is all over the shrub steppe. the Sage brush used to be probably the number one populated plant intell the invasive species Cheat grass came.

Loss of Biodiversity. The loss of biodiversity on the shrub steppe is crazy. Every day some of the shrub steppe dissapears of invasive species growing all around. Mainly the Cheat Grass is the invasive species. Some of them are cows, cheat grass, non-shrub-steppe animals. The only way we can help with the biodiversity is by getting rid of alot of farms and plant seeds all over so the shrub steppe will grow back.

Biodiversity on the forest needs help because many trees are being destroyed. Many animals that live all around the forest are going extinct and dissapering. The reason they are all dissapering is because of people. people are tearing down all of the forest. Amazon natives being killed in the rainforest because of the deforestation. Only 20% of the worlds Ancient forests left. Theres about 80% of the ancient forest have been destroyed. We need to stop destroying the forests because we need all those trees so we can breath.

conclusion. we need to help breed all the animals of the shrub steppe and the forests. so many animals have died off and went extinct because of deforeststaition. Deforestation has killed many many animals that live in the forests and rainforests. Our world looses about 100 trees every hour, and every few days we lose the amount of forest the size of Rhode Island in the United States Of America.

If only farmers would give up there land so the shrub steppe can grow back we would be able to grow back all of our shrub steppe land. So many species of animals and plants have been lost because of farmers. Farmers growing cheat grass, corn, beans, and many other things that are invasive species to the shrub steppe.

Argumentative investigative report

 Backround

My question that most intrested me is, How do introduced domesticated animals affect the shrub steppe? Why do i think that this question intrested me? It intrested me because here in white swan i see animals all the time mostly dead dogs on the side of the road. When i go into the shrub steppe i do not see any animals anywhere.

In the shrub steppe i heard there used to be many many animals that live in the shrub steppe but i no longer see any. My question is to get people to help with the shrub steppe. The shrub steppe needs help because many of the shrub steppe animals have died and went extinct.

Methods

In order to answer my question im going to get people to help me reasearch on biodiversity on the shrub steppe and why it needs help. I am going to read books on biodiversity and the shrub steppe and i am going to reasearch on the internet. The way i have tried to answer it was by research on the internet and reading some of my teacher Mr. Rices books on the shrub steppe. I really couldent answer this question as well because i was not here to go out to the field.

Arguments

Driving question

Driving Question:What should be done to help biodiversity in the Shrub Steppe?People should start helping in the shrub steppe. The animals are going extinct and many plants are dying off.

People need to help with the animals breeding so they can have babys. And also plant all kinds of plants. All the animals that live in the shrub steppe arent getting their healthy food because of all of the invasive species like the cheat grass. The cheat grass isent a good food that the animals get to eat.

I want to help because I went out to the shrub steppe feild, and did not see one single animal. I have watched a video on the shrub steppe and it said that the Pygmi Rabbit(Native animal to the shrub steppe) has gone extinct. It also said that the Sage Grouse(Another native animal to the shrub steppe) has become very close to extinction. The Sage Grouse is a very endangered animal.

In the shrub steppe it's very dry and dead. A lot of the plants in the shrub steppe look dead and dried out but, they really are not. The invasive species I was talking about earlier such as Cheat grass, and cows, fill the shrub steppe land! The Cheat grass is all over the place and nearly imposible to get rid of. The cows belong to the farmers and the farmers are not going to give up their lifestock because they need that to sell, and to eat.

One thing that will really help the shrub steppe grow back, is if the farmers moved away, and did not bring all these invasive species to the shrub steppe. If they moved away from the shrub steppe, The shrub steppe can grow back properly. The Shrub Steppe used to be half the size of Washington State. Now... the Shrub steppe is only about 10% left of it in Washtington State.

The Farmers have brought many invasive speices like cattle, corn, beans and cheat grass. Biodiversity has happened before in different areas back in time. It has happened in the Amizon Rainforest.

olden poem final draft

In the forest the hounds barked all around.

A deer ran across a log, above the creek.

A creek flowed quietly, through the ground.

Animals all around, its food they seek.

In the sky, predators seach for their food.

In the creek, small little fish swam around.

Sun went down, animals in a sad mood.

In the forest, there was barley sound.

A very chilling breeze, swept through a tree.

Animals ran happily, free as a bee.

As free as can be, there in the trees.

All animals should be able to see.

In the beautiful forest, its nice there.

Thres lots of animals, with furry hair.
